Two Minutes of Solitude

Did you party last night? We celebrated quietly, waiting to see the inevitable fireworks that illuminated the sky in various quarters. It was a cool, clear night, the half waning moon clearly visible and the sky studded with stars. Recently the cloud cover has been too thick to see them. I have often gone outside to watch the ISS pass over, but that hasn’t been visible for a while, far too much cloud.

Last night the heavens seemed even more vast than I remember. Orion and the Great Bear could both be seen in their entirety. Other constellations were visible too, but those are my favourites as they were the first I learnt to recognise. Tantalising hints of things that aren’t truly visible with the naked eye were also there – like the clusters of stars that could be seen with the corner of the eye but disappeared when given…
